Jenny Watson

Who: Jenny Watson
What: BA Coach & Physical Education
Where: Marjon, The College of St Mark & St John

My experience at university has been one of the most enjoyable and exciting experiences of my life; one I will never forget!

About me

My name is Jenny Watson and I am a student ambassador at Marjon doing a Coaching and PE degree. I come from the land of Cornwall and pasties! I went to Helston School and Community College, university is not that far to travel if I ever get homesick or need real Mother cooked food!

Choosing a course

I have always considered going to university even though I am the first from my family to go. I was never the most academic at school however there were always options to go into higher education. I took Media, PE and Geography at A level and went on to take Media at university. However further down the line I decided it wasn't the course for me! I decided to leave, take the rest of the year out and come back the year after to the same university to do a Coaching and PE course. This was definitely the course for me; I enjoy it so much and have managed to get a Swimming Coach job. It just shows that if you're not happy with the course or even university it isn't the end of the world, there are always ways to change or do something else you enjoy!

Life at uni

At university I have met so many friends that will be there for life. We have moved into a house together and had so many amazing times going to the beach, ice skating, going to the cinema, going out to pubs and clubs dancing and singing our socks off!

It is daunting moving in at the very beginning; however everyone is in the same boat so it is more exciting than scary! There are also so many different types of people and everyone mixes together. I even found out that here in Plymouth we have the third largest Chinese population in the UK!

Not so boring!

Essays, exams, presentations and coursework all seem like the boring and hard part of University, HOWEVER I found that so many people are there to help, like your lecturers – they are normal, friendly people (yes its hard to believe!!). There is also student support and even the librarians are happy to help!

It is not as boring as I thought, I get to go out in the big world and do placements, such as coaching children; it is not all lectures and seminars! I even enjoy writing some of the essays I get given as I am so interested in what they are about! One time I even got to bake a cake in a PE lesson – not sure how that one came about!!??

You CAN afford it!

Another issue I thought would be a problem was money, however I found with a part-time job and lots of support from the bank - as you get a loan and a handy overdraft - it's not too bad. It greatly depends on how you spend your money – spend it wisely and it should not be a problem, sometimes it is easier said than done!

It's not like school!

This is an overview of my experience at university, you have to remember that it is not like school – there are no teachers telling you to stand in the corner if you're late or miss a lesson! I feel so much more independent, even having to cook for myself makes the experience fun; a little scary though!
