Who: Brie Burton
What: Foundation degree in Information Technology
Where: Cornwall College Camborne

My journey into higher education was a bit of a roller coaster, but I got there in the end!

About me

In my 11th year at Cape Cornwall Secondary School I had no idea of what I wanted after school and the right route to take! I ended up going to Penwith College for a year and studied A levels, however I just wasn't happy with the situation and wasn't sure of where I was going. I ended up finishing at Penwith College and started at Cornwall College in September 2000 studying for my AVCE (now called Applied A levels) in Business Studies and A level Photography. I completed the two year course, and instead of going straight to university, I ended up taking a job as a sales assistant for a local company.

Going back to higher education

So three and a half years later I decided I wanted to go back to education but had no idea what course to enrol on. With a bit of advice from my manager I started studying for my Foundation degree in I.T at Cornwall College and I haven't looked back since! Before I started my Foundation degree I felt inadequate and used to kick myself for not trying better when I was younger.

Take the route that is right for YOU

I now realise that my experiences of holding down a full-time job, made me mature as a person and helped me decide what I wanted in life. I don't have any regrets and if I have learnt anything from the past, it is that you should do what your heart says, not what your parents or career advisers say. I have also learnt that you shouldn't be pressured into a career route you don't want to take.

A levels are not the only route into HE, there is so much you can do once you finish school, and it's just a matter of getting the correct advice. After all it is your life!
