Filling in PN1

  • This is a rough guide to filling out the PN1 form. For detailed instructions, download the Student Finance Direct guide

  • Everyone must fill in Sections 1,2,3,4,5,6, and the Loan Request Form and sign the section at the end of the form.

  • If you are applying for income assessed student finance you must also fill in Section 7,8,10,11,12,13.

  • If you have a parent, guardian or partner they will fill in Sections 11 and 12.

Section 1- Finance Available

This section lists the different forms of support you can apply for. Tick yes or no for each section.

If you are not sure which support you should be applying for, go to our Full-time student finance page for information about the different types of support to see if you are eligible.

Section 2 - Personal Details

In this section you will need to fill in details like your name, date of birth, address.

You will also need to provide your passport or birth certificate as evidence of your place of birth.

ART ID - you will only have this if you have applied for student finance before. Leave blank if you do not have one.

Section 3 - Residence

You will need to provide details of your nationality and provide your passport or birth certificate as evidence.

Section 4 - About your course

In this section you need to fill in details about the course you are applying for. If you have not yet received an offer, then fill in the details of the course that is your first choice.

If you later accept a place on a different course you will need to let Student Support Direct know.

Section 5 - Previous Student Loans

This section asks you if you have done any higher education study before and if you have had any student loans before.

Section 6 - Student’s Bank Details

In this section you will need to provide your

  • Sort Code

  • Account Number

for the bank account you want any loans or grants to be paid into.

Loan Request Form

You need to fill in this section if you are applying for a

  • Maintenance Loan and/or

  • Student Loan for Fees

You will need to provide your National Insurance number and state the amount you want to borrow.

You need to sign and date the declaration in this section.

Section 7 - Dependent or independent?

You only need to fill in this section if you are applying for income assessed financial support.

If you tick yes to any of the boxes in section 7a you will be considered financially independent therefore you will need to fill in Sections 8 and 9.

If you tick any of the boxes in section 7b or you tick yes to either 7c or 7d you may be considered financially independent and you will also need to fill in Section 8.

Section 8 - Student Finance Questions

In this section you need to provide details of your income such as money you receive from property, lettings, interest, investments and other payments you receive for attending your course during the academic year.

You will also need to provide details on any pension you receive from your employer and any children who are financially dependent on you.

Section 9 - Dependants grants and allowances

You only need to fill this section in if you are applying for any of the following:

  • Parents' Learning Allowance
  • Adult Dependant's Grant
  • Childcare Grant.

You will need to provide the following information:

  • you and your partner's income after tax and National Insurance
  • any Child Tax Credit or other Tax Credit you and your partner receive
  • if you receive any other income such as adoption agency payments, child benefit, guardian's allowance, fostering or boarding out payments, any disability pension or benefit .
Section 10 - About your Family

This section gives details about who you live with and who provides you with financial support.

Everyone who is applying for income assessed financial support must fill in this section.

Section 11 - Financial Details for the last tax year

This section must be completed by whoever has been named in Section 10.

This is often a parent, guardian or partner of the person applying for financial support.

In this section they will need to provide details of all of their taxable income like income from employment, self-employment, any pension, property, tax credits, income support and benefits.

They will need to provide evidence for all the different types of income they receive. The types of documents they will need to supply are:

  • P60
  • P11D
  • CB2
Section 12 - Dependents

This section needs to be filled in by the person(s) who filled in Section 11 and by those who are single independent students.

You need to list any dependents you have that are under 18 and any unearned income they receive as well as any dependents you have over 18 that are in higher or further education.

Section 13 - Bursary Consent Statements

This section gives permission for the information you have provided to be passed to your university or college to help them work out what financial support you are entitled to receive from them.

If you are happy for this information to be shared then you and the people named in Section 10 must both sign in this section.
